Plans to merge two fire stations in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf have been put on hold because there’s no suitable land for it.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been considering merging Treharris and Abercynon fire stations following a fire cover review carried out in 2014.
A report set to go before the South Wales Fire Authority says the move could save money by reducing the numbers of fire engines or stations in Merthyr.
Treharris fire station is currently located in Thomas Street and Abercynon fire station is located just off the B4275.
There was talk of a new station being located around the Fiddlers Elbow roundabout but at the time of finishing the review there was no suitable land available there but it was still recommended that should suitable land become free, an amalgamation between Treharris and Abercynon could be considered.
Since 2015 the fire service has done extensive investigations into the availability of suitable land in and around Treharris and Abercynon and although a site was identified this was deemed unsuitable.
Cwm Taf Hub conducted a pilot study and identified some land that may have been of use but this was not deemed suitable to the service.
It means the merger is no longer a current priority for the service, due to the lack of availability of a suitable site but it will still consider the merger if land becomes available in future.
