Plans to house 100 asylum seekers in Hale hotel dubbed 'most inappropriate location you could imagine'

Plans to put up more than 100 asylum seekers in a Hale village hotel have been described by a Trafford MP as the ‘most inappropriate location'.

Altrincham and Sale West MP Sir Graham Brady said he had learned before Christmas of the government’s plans to use a hotel in the village as temporary accommodation. He said that accommodating the group of young men, who would not be allowed to work, could cause issues in the village.

Residents in the villlage held a public meeting to discuss the plans last night (Thusday). The MEN has chosen not to name the hotel in question.

Hale, south of Altrincham, has a population of just over 15,000. Sir Graham said he had called for a meeting with the Home Secretary to discuss the plans and that the proposals had caused ‘disquiet’ among many of his constituents.

He said said that the hotel in question was ‘obviously the most inappropriate location you could imagine’.

He added: “I think it’s the worst possible place to house a very large number of young men who are by definition, because they are not allowed to work, unemployed. I met with a senior official from the Home Office three days before Christmas and communicated that.”

He said he believed there were more suitable facilities for housing such a group elsewhere.

The Home Office has said it did not comment on arrangements for individual sites used for asylum accommodation.

A spokesman, added: “The number of people arriving in the UK who require accommodation has reached record levels and has put our asylum system under incredible strain.

“The use of hotels to house asylum seekers is unacceptable and there are currently more than 37,000 asylum seekers in hotels costing the UK taxpayer £5.6million a day.

“The use of hotels is a temporary solution, and we are working hard with local authorities to find appropriate accommodation.”
