Plans submitted by firm behind Irn-Bru for major factory expansion

THE manufacturer of Irn-Bru and other well-known soft drink brands has approached North Lanarkshire Council seeking permission to expand its factory in Cumbernauld.

AG Barr has plans to add a single-storey, 672 square foot extension to its base in Westfield, complete with slabs for additional plant, a new access road and landscaping.

The development would not see an increase of parking provision, which would remain at 254 spaces.

Despite posting a record £420 million in sales in its latest trading update, AG Barr recently confirmed it would be discontinuing its Strathmore bottled water brand and closing a factory in Forfar, potentially resulting in 24 redundancies.

This otherwise strong showing was attributed to a “standout performance” from the Rubicon fruit drink brand as well as growth from the Irn-Bru range of products line, as well as distribution gains and successful new product launches.

The planning application to expand the company’s Cumbernauld headquarters is currently available for comment on North Lanarkshire Council’s website, where it has the reference number 25/00309/FUL.
