Plans for warm banks across South Lanarkshire to be voted on

South Lanarkshire councillors are to vote on implementing ‘warm banks’.

The motion, put forward by the South Lanarkshire SNP Group, calls for increased funding for community ‘warm banks’ and will be voted on at the full council meeting (September 28).

The group have brought forward the motion in response to the growing cost-of-living crisis and in recognition of the difficulties many residents may face this winter.

The motion invites all councillors to support an increase in pace, intensity and funding for community and voluntary groups who are best placed to lead this work and to make public buildings such as libraries and community halls available to enable every community to have access to a ‘warm bank’.

The warm banks will offer safe spaces for people to go, heat up, get a hot drink or meal and have access to advice and support.

Councillor Julia Marrs proposed the motion, which was seconded by councillor Maureen Chalmers.

Councillor Marrs, said: “It’s hard to believe in 2022 that we are talking about increasing both intensity and pace of work with our community organisations, third sector and leisure trust to provide warm, safe places for people to get hot drinks, food advice and support, but thanks to the Tory cost of living crisis, this is our reality.”

Cllr Chalmers added: “The council, communities and community planning partners developed excellent working relationships during the pandemic and unfortunately we must step up again to support our residents this winter. While the levers to mitigate these issues lie with the UK government, Councils and communities are left to deal with the harsh realities on a day to day basis so we urge all councillors to support this motion.”

The motion has been brought forward to recognise the most vulnerable people across South Lanarkshire will face challenges, and the ‘warm banks’ will aim to encourage people who are struggling to go to for support and warmth.
