Plans for Stapleford double yellows after 'very dangerous' parent parking for school

Double yellow lines have been proposed for a Stapleford street that residents say has been blighted by dangerous parking. People living in and around Blake Street said buses were sometimes unable to pass because of parents' parking near Fairfield Spencer Academy, based in Toton Lane.

"At school times, cars are parking, especially round the bend and traffic coming from Toton lane, onto Blake Road, buses can't get past," said Bea Smith. "God knows what would happen if a fire truck had to get through, it's too narrow."

The 63-year-old military nurse continued: "A few years ago, two cars smashed into each other and the whole area was all shut. We just heard this massive, big, bang."

David Turner, a 74-year-old retired soldier, said: "They (parents) can't be bothered. They park all the way up Silsley Avenue, it's everyday. I was saying to my wife the other day, there's a large blind spot between those two roads and cars parked round the bend just add to the problem. it's very dangerous."

Hayley Morgan, 37, said she was unable to park outside her own home. Complaints by residents have prompted action by Nottinghamshire County Council, which has proposed measures for Blake Road and Sisley Avenue.

A consultation was carried out on plans for double yellow lines around the junction connecting the street, and for single yellow lines along the north-west side of Blake Road. "We have received complaints regarding inconsiderate parking, particularly at school times, along Blake Road at Stapleford," an advert for the proposals on its website reads.

"This is causing difficulties for the buses to navigate their route. In order to help address these concerns, it is proposed to introduce parking restrictions along Blake Road and Sisley Avenue." It adds: "The proposals consist of the following: New Double Yellow Lines (No Waiting At Any time) around the junction of Blake Road and Sisley Avenue. New Single Yellow Lines (No Waiting Monday to Friday 8 am – 4.30 pm) along the north-west side of Blake Road."

Fairfield Spencer Academy declined to comment. Nottinghamshire Live has contacted Nottinghamshire County Council for further comment.
