A COASTAL car park has been described as “the ideal location” for an outdoor sauna.
The unusual plans for car park number three at Longniddry Bents would see a storage container transformed into the attraction.
The team behind the plans claims that the combination of “established activity, strong local businesses, and breathtaking surroundings makes Longniddry Bents the right fit for the project”.
East Coast Sauna is aiming to follow in the footsteps of similar schemes in St Andrews, Elie and Edinburgh.
A supporting statement has been included in a planning application lodged with East Lothian Council.
It notes three reasons as to why it is the ideal site and reads: “Thriving Outdoor Community: The area is already a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, including a vibrant open-water swimming, kite surfing community and for other water users. The sauna will complement these existing activities, offering participants a chance to relax and recover after their adventures.
“Local Success Stories: Alandas Fish and Chips, a highly popular business at the same site, has demonstrated that Longniddry Bents can attract both locals and visitors. The addition of East Coast Sauna will further enhance the appeal of the area as a destination for wellbeing and leisure.
“Natural Beauty: The stunning coastal scenery provides the perfect backdrop for a sauna experience, creating a tranquil environment that encourages relaxation and connection with nature.”
Outdoor saunas have been set up across the country and are “recognised for their ability to attract visitors, enhance local tourism, and deliver meaningful health benefits”.
The applicant highlights a list of key objectives, including promoting health and wellbeing.
Ladies’ nights, men-only evenings and plans to collaborate with local businesses are also flagged up.
Opening hours at the sauna, which aims to provide a space “where people can unwind, recharge and connect with others in a peaceful coastal setting”, would be adjusted for seasonal demand.
It is thought that the sauna, which would include a private changing area alongside a main sauna space, could accommodate up to 10 people.
The supporting statement reads: “Outdoor saunas are not just about relaxation: they bring people together, offer proven health benefits, and provide a much-needed escape from the pressures of modern life.
“East Coast Sauna will contribute to the local community by promoting mental and physical wellbeing while also encouraging tourism and showcasing the best of what East Lothian has to offer.
“East Coast Sauna is a way of giving back to the community and celebrating the stunning East Lothian coastline.
“Our goal is to create a unique, sustainable facility that improves health, fosters connections, and invites people to experience the joy of outdoor living.
“We’re confident this project will bring lasting benefits to the area and look forward to making it a reality.”
