Plans for new sports hall and boxing ring for community centre in Timperley

Plans for a new sports hall at a Trafford community centre will be decided next week.

Proposals for an extension to the side of Broomwood Community wellbeing centre in Timperley have been submitted to Trafford council.

The plans are for a single storey extension to the east facing side of the building to form a sports hall. The hall is set to include a 16’ boxing ring, floor space for boxing training and other sports, viewing areas for public and parents, a weight and fitness training area as well as toilets and changing facilities.

Planning permission for this extension was granted by the council back in 2018, and adjustments to the application were then made in 2020, but these have since lapsed.

Now, Timperley Amateur Boxing Club wish to have that permission granted again.

Concerned residents nearby have raised their worries about the increased traffic the extension could bring, however.

One wrote to the council and said: “Although I think it is a good thing to fully use the facilities provided by the community and wellbeing centre, I do have some concerns, mainly around problems caused by vehicles.

“The extension will totally dominate this part of the road, [and I am] concerned that it will cause traffic safety issues, affecting line of sight for traffic approaching the junction.”

They also raised concerns for the safety of pedestrians using this area as well as noise issues that could arise there.

They said: “[There is a] danger to pedestrians crossing between parked cars and navigating vehicles parked on the pavement. I have concerns about noise of people arriving and leaving the building, especially as some mornings they arrive at 7am, if more people use it at this time this could become an issue.”

Trafford council’s planning committee are due to consider the application and decide upon it on Thursday April 14.

Council officers have recommended that the application be approved, subject to conditions.
