Plans for new electric car charging points at Lanarkshire retail park given go ahead

Permission has been granted for new electrical vehicle charging points in a Wishaw retail park.

The proposal, submitted to the council’s planning department from the Osprey Charging Network, will now see an eight charger, high powered DC (rapid), electric vehicle charging hub at the Caledonian retail park in Craigneuk.

Giving its consent, council planners state: “The proposed EV charging hub, substation and associated ancillary works are acceptable as they could be accommodated within the site without adversely affecting the commercial amenity of neighbouring properties or the surrounding area.”

No letters of objection or support were received for the proposals.

In its planning statement, Osprey stated: “To accommodate the charging hub on what is already an extremely busy site, we have located the development near to the main entrance of the park.

“This will limit the amount of through traffic and minimise disruption to the park; both during construction and once in operation.

“Regarding the site layout, the chargers and infrastructure will be located to the northeast of the site, at the edge of the retail park. The whole development is contained well within a single area of the park to avoid disruption.

“In order to better accommodate customers with reduced mobility, all of the charging bays have been designed with extra space to accommodate all users, including those who use wheelchairs.

“To reduce the visual impact of the electrical substation (required to provide power for the charge points), it has been located on a verge immediately beside the retail centre’s car parking area.

“It will be surrounded by a close board, wooden fence.

“This will help it to blend the background of the site.”
