More affordable houses are set to be built in Cardiff as plans to demolish buildings next to a former milk factory have been approved. A mix of 35 houses and apartments will be built on the current site of the Mele & Co warehouse on Sanatorium Road in Canton.
The proposals include plans for a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments and houses that will be built on land next to the site of the Cardiff milk factory development. The site of the former milk factory, Milk and More, will make way for affordable housing with over 50 apartments and 15 townhouses.
Developers submitted their plans to Cardiff Council in March and said there is "an unmet demand for affordable housing in this area of Cardiff". The new affordable houses will join other new developments that have seen hundreds of homes built in recent years, such as the huge Mill development. The proposals have been submitted by United Welsh Housing Association under the Harmoni Homes Limited brand, with plans for buildings that range between two and four storeys.

The plans also include allocated parking spaces for residents, as well as visitor parking spaces, and bike storage. Plans were also confirmed earlier this year for 106 new homes to be built on the site of the former Lansdowne Hospital on land east of Sanatorium Road.
The development would consist of 33 one-bed apartments, 29 two-bed apartments, 12 two-bed homes, 24 three-bed homes, and eight four-bed homes. It will be split over three blocks.
Dozens of residents have already expressed concerns over the proposed development. Comments sent to the developers include concerns over congestion, speeding on Sanatorium Road and increased anti-social behaviour.
The developers said: "A number of local residents were concerned that the development of affordable housing could impact on the value of their property."
In response, they said: "There is an unmet demand for affordable housing in this area of Cardiff. Proposals would regenerate a brownfield site to deliver a high quality, sustainable and affordable housing development to meet these needs."
Planning documents for the Mele & Co site state: "The scheme presents an attractive and high-quality development, that is sympathetic to its local context and appropriate to the scale of the area; delivering sustainable and robust homes. The proposal is a natural continuation of other redevelopment proposals along Sanatorium Road, whilst also reinforcing local vernacular materials and developing its own identity."
