Plans for indoor skydiving venue at Cribbs Causeway face uncertain future

The future of an indoor skydiving centre which was planned for Cribbs Causeway is in doubt. In 2018, plans were approved for a new iFly centre to open at the shopping centre in South Gloucestershire.

But a planning application has been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council to build a Greggs drive-through takeaway on the land where the skydiving centre was supposed to go. A planning statement submitted with the application says that it "seeks to re-plan the area that was originally proposed to be a restaurant and indoor skydiving venue."

It does not give any reasons why the skydiving centre is no longer being built. No application has yet been submitted to the council to build the centre on a different piece of land at Cribbs Causeway.

The venue has a slightly turbulent planning history. It was given permission to open in April 2017 alongside an ice rink and an indoor skiing complex, and it was hoped the development would open in 2018.

However, the main construction of the facility was delayed and the developers confirmed in March 2018 they need to submit an amendment to the original planning application surrounding 'material alterations' in order to get the project up and running. The plans were then given the go ahead by the council again on Friday, October 12.

The plans for the new Greggs drive-through which will replace the skydiving centre have yet to be approved by the council. If they are, the store will be opened opposite the Costa coffee shop which is already at Cribbs Causeway.

Cribbs Causeway and iFly have both been approached for comment.
