Plans for homes in Pillgwenlly regeneration plan approved

Plans for new homes as part of a regeneration of one of Newport's most trouble-hit areas have been given the green light.

Plans for 11 homes at Constables Close in Pillgwenlly, just outside the city centre, have been approved by Newport City Council.

The proposals, put forward by housing provider Linc Cymru, were first revealed back in April 2019, with a planning application being submitted a year later.

Originally submitted in February 2020, the plans for the development were then revised following comments from consultees including members of the community, before being approved recently by council planners.

Linc said the project was part of a "wider regeneration project in the Pill area" which they hope will create more "pedestrian footfall" and "create a safer environment for local residents."

The plans will see the demolition of several properties and the widening of a number of rear gardens, as well as the conversion of some houses to flats.

Eight existing flats on the site will be converted into four houses, two current houses will be converted into five supported accommodation flats and one existing house will be converted into two maisonettes.

Four existing properties will be demolished to improve access to other homes, with more green spaces, widened gardens and a new courtyard parking area also set to be built.

Andrew Beale, Project Manager at Linc, said: "We are pleased to share that our proposals for Constables Close have been approved and are eager to move onto the next phase of this project.

"Since the proposals were first revealed, Linc has been working closely with local councillors, residents, and community groups to ensure our plans are fit for the future.

"At Linc, our purpose is ‘creating the right environment for people to flourish’ and we hope these plans for Pill will support the wellbeing of local residents and create a great place to live.

"We will continue to communicate with residents throughout the next phase of this project and are looking forward to seeing these plans come to life."
