Plans for a 600-bedroom new student accommodation led scheme rising up to 25-storeys in the centre of Cardiff have been submitted to planners.
It follows the ending of a public consultation for the proposed redevelopment of the Friary House building on Greyfriars Road from real estate firm Topland.
Designed by ECE Westworks Architects the project, if approved, would see the existing largely redundant building replaced with an 11-storey building rising towards the back of the site to 25-storeys.
Topland is working with specialist student accommodation developer Colico Living on the scheme.
Lisa Timberlake, project lead for Colico Living, said: “Following a successful consultation on our draft planning application, we have made some refinements, and are pleased to now be in a position to submit our final plans to Cardiff Council for consideration. Our scheme provides sustainable, city-centre accommodation that can help meet the growing demand for high quality student accommodation, whilst also reducing demand for homes in family neighbourhoods near the city-centre.”
William Davies, director of asset management at Topland Group said:“This is an important milestone for us in terms of ensuring a positive future for Friary House. We are really excited to submit these plans for this key city centre site, that will introduce new vibrancy into this location and add a positive outlook to the streetscape.”
The scheme would also provide new retail space. Topland has owned the property for more than a decade. When revealing its plans earlier this year it said the 1960s built building, which extends to 45,000 sq ft, had reached the end of its life as an office location. Operator of a night club in the building, Tiger Tiger, recently closed its venue.
Topland sold the adjacent 25-storey Capital Tower office to Trinova Real Estate in a £25m deal in 2018.
