Plans for 471-bed student block in Bristol given green light

Plans for a purpose-built student accommodation scheme in central Bristol have been given the go ahead by Bristol City Council. Student housing provider Host said it would now move forward with the construction of the 471-bed block on Avon Street.

As well as student flats, the proposals include 300 sq m of flexible space in the form of a hub. The development, on the 0.36 hectare site, will be delivered across three buildings and arranged around an open courtyard.

The buildings, which were formerly occupied by Chanson Foods, are 200 metres from Bristol Temple Meads station and overlook the city's Floating Harbour. They will also be next to the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

The student block is scheduled for completion by August 2025.

"[The development] will relieve some of the housing pressure on residential areas in the city and provide high-quality student accommodation and shared facilities in a superb location," a spokesperson for Host said.

The plans for Avon Street have been designed by the Bristol office of global architecture practice Chapman Taylor, and developed in consultation with the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council. Savills acted as planning consultants.

According to Host, the architecture of the new buildings references the area’s industrial past and the nearby historic railway structures. The scheme has been designed to go beyond the environmental requirements of Bristol City Council and will target BREEAM Excellent.

John Nesbitt, managing director at Host Student Housing, said: “The transformation of Bristol Temple Quarter and St Philip’s Marsh is one of the UK’s largest regeneration projects and we are excited to be able to play our part.

"Our team has worked extensively with the University, Bristol City Council and other local community stakeholders to unlock this development opportunity. It will not only create best in class student accommodation in the heart of the city, but also act as a catalyst for achieving the wider vision for this part of Bristol as a sustainable and flourishing new urban area.”

Host is one of the largest providers of student accommodation in the UK, currently operating around 9,000 student beds across 28 sites. The business, in conjunction with Tiger Developments, is part of the O’ Flynn Group of companies.
