Plans to build 144 new houses next to the M4 motorway in Cardiff have been approved. Independent housebuilder Dandara has received planning consent for its new Sant Silian development in OId St Mellons, which is located less than a mile from one of Cardiff's busiest retail parks.
The new project on Bridge Road will deliver two, three, four and five-bedroom family homes, which will eventually form part of a wider development along the Rhymney River, including a community centre, school, allotments and a riverside park. The planning approval comes nine months after the developer acquired the 9.5-acre site between the river and Cardiff Gate Retail Park. The development is set to launch off-plan in January 2023.
The site benefits from handy transport links, with the Pentwyn Link Road providing easy access onto the M4 and into the city centre, while the retail park is home to a large Asda supermarket, a gym and various cafes and restaurants. The Rhymney Trail is also on its doorstep, while Pontprennau Primary School and Corpus Christi Catholic High School are also nearby.
"This planning approval is a big step forward in our provision of versatile family homes to help meet the considerable demand for new housing in Cardiff," said Martin Smith, managing director at Dandara Wales & West. “It’s a fantastic site in a prime location and we will be offering a range of homes for a variety of buyers, from growing families to those looking to purchase their first ever home."
He added: "This site will create plenty of new local employment opportunities, as we plan to use locally sourced staff, sub-contractors and materials to ensure that we remain a sustainable business, supporting the Welsh economy."
