Planning a Christmas party? Researchers reveal ‘perfect’ formula for a successful bash

From trying to guesstimate how canapes will be enough to stocking the fridge with enough bottles of prosecco, planning a Christmas party is never easy – and that’s before you’ve even started thinking about the all-important playlist.

Thankfully, researchers have come to the rescue and after surveying 2,000 people up and down the country, they’ve settled on a formula to help you deliver a bash to remember (for all the right reasons).

House parties have become the overwhelming favourite, with 43 per cent preferring them while just 5 per cent love an office party and 4 per cent are still clinging on to pandemic-era online gatherings, according to the study.

But while parties at home (or even better, at someone else’s) are the go-to option, there are risk factors to consider. Nobody wants to see drinks spilled all over a brand-new sofa, or be left trying to nudge drunk pals out of the front door at 3am.

Based on the data provided by Dr Harriet Baird, social Psychologist from the University of Sheffield, Co-op has devised the perfect formula to ensure things go without a hitch, and it covers everything from how much food to serve to which date to host your get-together on.

If you’re attending a Christmas party at someone else’s then do bring a gift as 90 per cent of people think it’s a major faux pax to show up empty-handed, according to the University of Sheffield research.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 44 per cent of Brits think a bottle of wine is the ultimate gift, while 26 per cent opt for bringing along some food for the buffet.

Co-op’s head of brand Nicole Tallant said: “This year, we have noticed more people are opting for smaller, more frequent get-togethers throughout the festive season, which is why we created The Occasion Equation.

“It’s our way of taking the guesswork out of party planning and helping everyone – especially those juggling busy lives – host truly memorable celebrations without the stress. We’ve cracked the code, so you can focus on enjoying the festive fun with friends and family.”
