Plane forced to land after horrifying 'odour' in passenger's bag sparks mass cabin nausea

A plane carrying 173 people was forced to turn around after passengers were left feeling ill from a smell coming from someone's bag.

The American Airlines Flight 388 made an emergency landing while en route to Barbados on Wednesday evening, following reports of sickness.

A number of people on board are reportedly noticed a 'chemical odour' emanating from an item of carry-on luggage after take-off.

The plane returned to Miami-Dade airport in Florida, where passengers were escorted onto the tarmac before being taken back to the terminal.

Firefighters carried out emergency checks before five patients were taken to hospital as a precaution, with a spokesperson describing the incident as a ' multi-casualty incident and hazardous situation'.

A Hazmat unit then boarded the plane to search for the source of the smell.

Passengers were meanwhile given hotel accommodation overnight before a new flight was scheduled for the morning. Flight tracking data from FlightAware showed the plane back in action on Thursday.

An American Airlines spokesperson later confirmed that an evacuation procedure had taken place, saying: “American Airlines flight 338 with service from Miami (MIA) to Barbados (BGI) returned to MIA this evening due to a chemical odour in the cabin caused by the contents of a customer’s carry on luggage.

The airline said all affected passengers were offered hotel accommodation, with a new flight scheduled for the following morning (CBS News)

"The aircraft landed safely and without incident, and customers deplaned normally. All customers were offered hotel accommodations and the flight is now scheduled to redepart tomorrow at 9 a.m.”

Earlier this year, terrified passengers screamed and scrambled to get off a plane after it burst into flames during a horror crash landing at Miami Airport.

The aircraft was reportedly returning to the Florida international transit hub from the Dominican Republic when the landing gear failed - forcing the pilot to crash land the 100-passenger flight.

In footage recorded outside the plane, firefighters could be seen spraying foam over the aircraft in a desperate attempt to quench the blaze.
