Plans for a new set of tower blocks up to 35 storeys tall have been outlined for East Greenwich. The project would see 564 new homes being built on Telcon Way, 33 per cent of which would be ‘affordable’.
The scheme, called Enderby Place, would consist of three blocks at three, 23 and 35 storeys tall respectively. It would be built beside the Grade II listed Enderby House, a 19th century pub that was once owned by the largest whaling and sealing company in Britain, Samuel Enderby & Sons.
Planning documents from Buckley Gray Yeoman, on behalf of Maritime View Limited, state a residential garden is planned between the three blocks with space for a cafe and shops also included. All flats are planned to have their own balcony.
The scheme has received 92 objections online, with Labour Councillor Rowshan Hannan, representing the East Greenwich ward, expressing concerns on the proposed height of the scheme. The East Greenwich Residents Association said in their representation that the group was keen to see the site sympathetically developed as it was currently a fly-tipped ‘eyesore’, but described the height of the planned buildings as ‘ludicrous’.
One resident said in their objection: “The proposed towers are unnecessarily and extraordinarily high, and will not only dwarf nearby housing areas and developments, but will also completely obliterate the views of the river which many of us have been enjoying for years.”
Planning documents noted that planning permission was previously granted by the council in 2015 for the construction of 477 new homes on the site in three blocks up to 32 storeys tall. The applicant said the current proposal had been informed by several rounds of consultations with the Greater London Authority, ward councillors and residents.
Council officers and the applicant also both stated that permission had already been granted for another residential development north of the site in Morden Wharf, with blocks up to 36 storeys tall. Officers said in their report that the proposal was considered to make a positive contribution to the existing and emerging skyline in the area.
They said: “The proposed scheme for the most part does appear part of the emerging and approved tall buildings cluster both within the Greenwich Peninsula and Greenwich Peninsula West and with the proposed massing and form of the scheme having been effectively broken down into taller central elements and slightly recessed.”
The plans for the new block of flats on Enderby Place will be discussed at a planning meeting for Greenwich Council on May 21.
