Guitarist Joey Santiago has cleaned up his backstage requests after being admitted to rehab in 2016 – and now just asks for comfy pyjamas on the road.
The Debaser star, who performed at BST Hyde Park over the weekend, described himself as a “functioning alcoholic” until his problems spiralled so badly at one point he almost accidentally let his dog drown.
It was then he decided to clean up his act.
Now completely sober, the 57-year-old meditates backstage and looks forward to bedtime.
“I never wore pyjamas back then,” he says. “Now it’s like, ‘Holy crap, these are comfortable’.”
Speaking in 2019, he recounted of his wilder years: “Everything came up at once, and I’ve always loved to drink, I drank every day since I was 20 or something.
“I started doing drugs, and that became a love. My dog almost drowned in front of me. It was getting ridiculous.”
He admitted his antics “probably” affected his work, and praised his bandmates’ patience, recalling: “There were days I wasn’t ready and wouldn’t show up when we were making demos.”
But now “the new Joey” is far more Tame backstage.
