On New Year’s Day 2023 Pitlochry’s central chippie, Plaice to Be, was just that - the place to go for a festive fry up.
While the Highland Perthshire town enjoyed a dance in the street to begin 2023, boxes of chips and fish suppers were flying out the door.
Owner Hugh Foster let it be known that every penny spent in the takeaway that day would go to charity.
Hugh has been opening his shop from 1pm-5pm on New Year’s Day and giving all the day’s money to local causes for at least a decade, perhaps more.
Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance was Plaice to Be’s chosen charity in 2022 but the Pitlochry NYD Street Party did not happen and the takings were not so huge. So this year, Hugh gave SCAA another chance to benefit.
On January 1, 2023, Plaice to Be netted a whopping £2728.15.
As well as all the cash for sales of fish and chips, big-hearted Hugh covered the card machine charges and staff wages so 100 per cent of the takings from the day went to the flying ambulance charity.
“A huge thank you to everyone who came along on January 1,” said Hugh. “We raised £2728.15. It’s absolutely fantastic.”
He recently presented the money to SCAA at the charity’s base at Perth Airport.
