Pirates of the Caribbean and Men in Black star Sergio Calderón dies at 77

Pirates of the Caribbean star Sergio Calderón has died at the age of 77.

The character actor, who had been working in film and television for over six decades, died of natural causes.

He passed away on Wednesday in a Los Angeles hospital, his spokesperson confirmed.

Sergio is survived by his wife Karen Dakin, children Patrick Calderón-Dakin and Johanna Calderón-Dakin, his son-in-law and his grandchildren Krishnaavi, Emiliano and Victoria.

The Mexican star was known for playing a "head on a stick", which was held by an alien, in the iconic 1997 movie Men in Black.

Sergio also played Spanish pirate lord Captain Vallenueva in Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End alongside Johnny Depp.

The actor moved from his village to Mexico City when he was 10 years old and studied at the Instituto Andrés Soler of the Asociación Nacional de Actores.

His acting debut came in 1970 when he took on a role in The Bridge in the Jungle.

After he was cast in the 1979 The In-Laws, he was admitted to the Screen Actors Guild and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.

He played in dozens of movies throughout his career, including The Revengers, The Children of Sánchez, Le Chévre, Old Gringo and The Missing.

He also had roles in Ruins, Little Fockers and FX series Better Things.

His most recent role was as Detective Silverio Narro in The Resor and Carter in The Seven Faces of Jane.

Sergio loved playing villains in his roles and previously discussed people's reaction to it.

"I love to play those types of characters, because people really hate me," he told the Los Angeles Times in a recent interview.

"They tell me in the streets how much they hate me. But to me, that is my success. Because that means I was able to convince people with what I performed."
