PIP payment date and award rate update for those moving over to benefit

A new health benefit is set to gradually replace the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for those living in Scotland.

Adult Disability Payment is a devolved benefit that will provide support to people aged between 16 and State Pension age, who are disabled, have a long-term health condition or have a terminal illness.

The Daily Record reports that those already receiving PIP and Disability Living Allowance (DLA) from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) do not need to apply for the new benefit.

Around 322,387 existing awards will be transferred automatically from DWP to the devolved welfare system in stages. This is part of a managed migration process which is expected to be completed by 2025, according to the newly released Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018: progress report 2021 to 2022.

Social Security Scotland will deliver the Adult Disability Payment, and has updated their online guidance to explain that anyone who transfers from PIP to Adult Disability Payment will receive the same award payment as they do for PIP.

They have also reassured claimants that payments will be made on the same day and there will be no gaps in payments during the move from PIP to Adult Disability Payment.

It will take around three months to move someone from PIP to Adult Disability Payment, and Social Security Scotland have confirmed that they will write to people to inform them when to expect their first payment.

The letter also includes how to ensure they continue to receive any other benefits from DWP or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Anyone currently receiving PIP does not need to apply for Adult Disability Payment.

Also, the company confirmed that it will not reassess or review your award during the move.

Until your PIP has moved to Adult Disability Payment, you will need to continue:

  • answering any requests from DWP - e.g. filling in a PIP review or renewal form
  • reporting changes to DWP
