Pinellas County officials have confirmed five storm-related fatalities on Friday morning. Two of the fatalities occurred in Treasure Island, two in Indian Rocks Beach, and one in Dunedin, according to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
Sheriff Gualtieri expressed that despite efforts to assist those in need, the severe conditions made it challenging for first responders to reach all individuals who called for help. The sheriff mentioned that attempts were made to launch boats and use high water vehicles, but numerous obstacles hindered rescue operations.
First responders are currently conducting door-to-door checks at locations where distress calls originated. Sheriff Gualtieri acknowledged the possibility of the death toll increasing as the situation unfolds.
According to the sheriff, at least two of the fatalities are confirmed as drownings, while investigations are ongoing for the others. All deaths are being classified as storm-related.
Pinellas County Emergency Management Director Cathie Perkins expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events and emphasized the community's commitment to supporting recovery efforts and restoration for affected residents.
