Federal transport safety investigators are headed to the site of a fatal light plane crash near Seaview in Gippsland, east of Melbourne.
Police say the plane crashed in rugged terrain near Grand Ridge Road, about 35 kilometres south of Warragul, around 7:15am.
The pilot, a 60-year-old Leongatha man, was the sole occupant of the aircraft, and died at the scene.
He is yet to be formally identified.
A spokesman for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said its investigators were looking into what happened to the Piper PA-25 agricultural aircraft.
"During spraying operations, the aircraft collided with terrain," the regulator's statement said.
"A team of transport safety investigators from ATSB's Melbourne and Brisbane offices with expertise in aircraft operations, maintenance and engineering is deploying to the accident site."
A preliminary ATSB report is expected in six to eight weeks.
The police will prepare a report for the coroner.
