The bodies of two men killed in a light aircraft crash on the mid-north coast of New South Wales have been recovered from the wreckage as the investigation continues.
The pair took off from a private airfield near Coffs Harbour on Saturday.
Police teams found the body of one man later that day. An operation to retrieve the wreck and the second body resumed on Sunday morning.
Both men are yet to be formally identified.
The police operation to retrieve the aircraft from Scotts Head beach remained under way on Sunday afternoon, supported by Marine Rescue NSW and Surf Life Saving Australia.
The aircraft left a private airfield at Coffs Harbour about 3.30pm on Saturday with two men on board, police have confirmed.
Emergency services responded after 4pm to reports of a microlight crash off Nambucca Heads.
A witness told police he had seen a light plane appear to go down out to sea. Wreckage was seen about 1.5km offshore soon afterwards.
Supt Grant Rice of Fire and Rescue NSW told the ABC that crews were in the Nambucca Valley assisting with the clean-up. “We’ve got our hazmat teams just picking up some debris that’s been washed up along the shoreline,” he said.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
