KOLKATA: A PIL was filed in Calcutta high court seeking a ban on bursting of firecrackers considering the existing pandemic situation. The case will be heard on October 29.
The petitioner, social worker Roshni Ali, has pleaded that bursting of firecrackers will increase air pollution and lead to breathing problems for Covid-positive patients.
The petitioner also mentioned about the HC order of 2020 which had put a similar ban on crackers. The petitioner stated that the situation will worsen if there is no ban on crackers as already the figures of Covid are on the rise.
Last year, a similar petition was filed in the HC and the court had put a ban on use of firecrackers. The petitioner wanted that a similar ban be imposed this time too on the use of crackers.
The Supreme Court had already asked fireworks manufacturers not to use polluting chemicals in crackers. However, the directive on green crackers is yet to be completely implemented. The apex court will hear the case on the matter on Wednesday.
