Piers Morgan has never been one to shy away from controversy, and it would seem his new TV show will be nothing short of exactly that. Revealing the news of his upcoming programme on social media, the 56-year-old promised it would ‘cancel the cancel culture’ - and fans can't wait.
The new sixty-minute daily TV show - called Piers Morgan Uncensored - will air in the UK, US and Australia on new channel TalkTV, which is set to rival the likes of BBC News, Sky News and GB News. Although the exact date the show will start is yet to be announced, it is expected to take on 'cancel culture' and be a “fearless forum for lively, intelligent debates and agenda-setting interviews.”
Piers shared the news to his followers today (Tuesday, March 9), exactly one year on from leaving ITV’s Good Morning Britain after being heavily criticized about comments relating to Meghan Markle’s suicide claims. “A year ago today, I was forced to leave a job I loved, at the peak of its success, for having the audacity to express an honestly held opinion," Piers said - which you can watch in the video above .
He continued: "This shouldn’t happen in any democracy supposedly built on the principles of free speech and freedom of expression. I’m delighted to now be returning to live television with a new daily show whose main purpose is to cancel the Cancel Culture which has infected societies around the world. I want it to be a platform for lively vigorous debate, news-making interviews, and that increasingly taboo three-letter word: fun. I also want it to annoy all the right people.”
Fans rushed to their keyboards to react to the news - with many expressing their excitement of seeing the broadcaster back on TV screens. One follower, @jamie_christiie commented: "@PiersUncensored and @piersmorganLooking forward to this Piers, welcome back to TV!"
@Stevurt wrote: "This sounds great piers can’t wait to watch!!!", while @LolNo35 put: "The legend returns."
With a cry laughing emoji face, @tobigtocarry said: "Welcome back."
@mufcmad10 admitted: "I cant wait... this will be great," and @fallentoa agreed: "Piers, Go for it. I can't wait for you to be on again. I've really missed you. xx"
"Go get em, Piers," @jimbohardiman added, as @johnbor76785094 simply tweeted: "Finally!!"
@helenmc46972890 said: "Excellent" followed by five clapping hands emojis.
@frynwood wrote: "Welcome back Piers. Well done for sticking to your principles. Can’t wait for your new show."
However, not everyone was pleased with Piers' new show announcement and questioned its agenda, @george__1992 tweeted: "You walked off stage because you couldn't accept freedom of speech. how are you now making a career out of championing the very thing you couldn't accept?"
@JamieMurphy0716 asked: "Great - but will you actually allow people to speak and not be all about you?"
@pmcteague posted: "Did u not cancel @alexberesfordTV when you walked out, where’s his freedom to call you out?"
"I'd rather stick pins in my eyes, so thanks for the warning," @speedy_hen quipped.
Morgan’s comments about Meghan Markle spurred more than 50,000 complaints to Ofcom, becoming one of the most complained about incidents on UK TV. Earlier Piers insisted he has 'no regrets' about quitting Good Morning Britain.
Taking to his Instagram account, Piers posted a picture of himself walking off air after his clash with the show's weatherman Alex Beresford accompanied by: "A year ago today, I went for a little stroll… and in the words of Edith Piaf, je ne regrette rien! [I regret nothing] #LongWalkToFreedomOfSpeech."
TalkTV, owned by Murdoch’s News UK, is on course to launch soon. It already has hired several behind-the-camera execs from News UK’s brands - including The Times newspaper.
