Television presenter Piers Morgan has told Donald Trump to "take a chill pill" as the two men continue to clash over a heated interview.
Trump yesterday (Thursday, April 21) issued two statements lashing out at Morgan and accusing him of faking a promo trailer that appeared to show the former US president walking out of the interview. In response, Morgan gleefully tweeted: "We haven’t even aired it yet, and he’s already released two furious statements… about a PROMO?! Take a chill pill, Mr President - it’s a great interview, even if you did lose your rag a bit. "
The trailer for the interview, the first for Morgan's TV show on Rupert Murdoch-owned Talk TV, which debuts on Monday, showed what appeared to be a Trump walkout after Morgan rejected his discredited insistence that he won the 2020 presidential election and was cheated out of his victory.
"Turn the camera off,” Trump says at the close of the video clip as he appears to rise from his chair. "Very dishonest."
But audio of the end of the interview - released by the Trump camp - seems to tell a different story, with the two men laughing and thanking each other. "That was a great interview," Morgan says and Trump agrees with a "yeah."
Yesterday, Morgan appeared to be enjoying the added publicity the controversy is bringing to his new show. He tweeted: "The ‘rigged’ promo that’s rocking the world. Don’t miss my world exclusive President Trump interview next Monday & Tuesday on @PiersUncensored - when all will be revealed!"
Trump, who has been banned from Twitter, said in one statement: "Piers Morgan, like the rest of the Fake News Media, attempted to unlawfully and deceptively edit his long and tedious interview with me.
"The good news is that the interview was taped by us as a means of keeping him honest. The interview was actually very strong on the 2020 Election Fraud, with me calling him “a fool” if he truly believed those results. The evidence is massive and irrefutable."
In his second statement, the 75-year-old Trump continues to repeat his his claim that he won the election. And he includes a bizarre rant about New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is investigating him and his business affairs.
He writes that if he “did what Piers Morgan did... Attorney General of New York State, Letitia James, would start an immediate investigation and demand the re-institution of the death penalty, or whatever may be worse than that.”
He added: "Piers got caught red-handed, and the interview that I rather enjoyed doing is now in shambles. Piers is off to a bad start, but thanks to me, he may get a final burst of big ratings before it all comes crashing down!"
