Piers Morgan sticks the boot into Mikel Arteta over "unnecessary" Arsenal decision

Despite Arsenal’s victory over Wolves on Thursday night, Piers Morgan has still taken to Twitter to aim some digs at Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners came from behind to snatch all three points from Bruno Lage’s side, moving them into fifth place and one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United with two games in hand.

Morgan has been vocal in his admiration for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and the striker’s move to Barcelona hasn’t changed that.

Morgan tweeted: “Loved our resilience in coming from behind to win, but our main striker hasn’t scored since Boxing Day, while Aubameyang is banging them in for fun at Barca. Losing him was a massive loss and so unnecessary."

Alexandre Lacazette was the ‘main striker’ being referred to by the journalist, and the Frenchman was at the heart of Arsenal ’s win over Wolves.

The striker’s cross was turned into the back of the net by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa in the 95th minute to send the Emirates Stadium into a frenzy and complete a great comeback by Arteta’s side.

Hee-Chan Hwang had opened the scoring for the away side in the 10th minute when he latches onto a poor back pass from Gabriel and tucked the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.

Nicolas Pepe then equalised for the Gunners in the 82nd minute when he was allowed time to turn and fire home inside the penalty area before Sa turned home Lacazette’s effort.

Aubameyang was on the scoresheet as well on the night, scoring Barcelona’s fourth in their 4-2 victory over Napoli in the Europa League Round of 32.

Morgan quote tweeted a video of the goal with the caption: “Another brilliant goal by a world-class striker. If only Arsenal had a player like this leading the line… oh wait,” followed by a flurry of furious-looking emojis.

Aubameyang was allowed to leave for the La Liga outfit in January following a disciplinary breach that saw him stripped of club captaincy, with Arteta pushing for the Gabon international to be allowed to leave North London.

Discussing the victory over Wolves, Arteta said: “It was an important win for us. The way we won it creates such a belief and togetherness and an atmosphere and cohesion with our fans as well and that’s extremely necessary. This is a really young squad and we need that.”

Arsenal’s chances of earning Champions League football looked slim after the first few weeks of the season, they lost their opening three games and the team looked disjointed and out of confidence.

But Arteta has worked hard to change his side’s fortunes, he explained: “It was an important win for us. The way we won it creates such a belief and togetherness and an atmosphere and cohesion with our fans as well and that’s extremely necessary. This is a really young squad and we need that.”

Arsenal take on relegation-battling Watford next weekend, though they will be hoping that Roy Hodgson’s men will be able to put up a strong performance this weekend when they take on United.
