Piers Morgan has taken a swipe at Sir Keir Starmer after the Prime Minister finally spoke out following last week’s Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
In a statement that marks a clear shift from his past remarks, Starmer said: “A woman is an adult female” — a departure from his earlier stance that “trans women are women.” The change has sparked fierce reactions, with Morgan posting on X, “Extraordinary that the British Prime Minister needed a court to tell him what a woman is”, reported the Express.
Independent MP Rosie Duffield, who has previously clashed with Starmer over gender identity, also chimed in, saying: “A Court, Tony Blair. But not the thousands of women who obviously couldn’t quite make ourselves heard…?”
The Prime Minister was pressed again on his previous position, but didn’t repeat it. Instead, he pointed to last Wednesday’s Supreme Court judgement, which confirmed that under the 2010 Equality Act, the terms “woman” and “s*x” refer to biological s*x, not gender identity.
When asked if that meant he no longer believes a trans woman is a woman, Starmer told ITV West Country: “A woman is an adult female, and the court has made that absolutely clear.”
He added: “I actually welcome the judgment because I think it gives real clarity. It allows those that have got to draw up guidance to be really clear about what that guidance should say.”
He also said it was important to move forward and ensure all official guidance is aligned with the Supreme Court’s ruling. “It’s real clarity in an area where we did need clarity, I’m pleased it’s come about.”
Downing Street later confirmed that this statement represented a U-turn. When asked directly whether Starmer still believed a transgender woman is a woman, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “No, the Supreme Court judgement has made clear that when looking at the Equality Act, a woman is a biological woman. That is set out clearly by the court judgment.”
The ruling and Starmer’s shift have reignited debate over gender identity, biological s*x, and how the law defines both, especially when it comes to spaces like women’s shelters and prisons. And with this being the first time the PM has publicly backed away from his previous stance, it’s clear the conversation is far from over.
