Piers Morgan's 'gender-fluid' royal baby tweet sparks furious backlash as he 'fails to muster enthusiasm'

Piers Morgan incurred the wrath of fans after making a jibe about the royal baby as the country celebrated the new arrival.

The Good Morning Britain anchor told his 6.6m followers that he was “failing” to find any enthusiasm to present Tuesday’s edition of the breakfast show amid the news the Duchess of Sussex had delivered a healthy baby boy on Monday morning.

He wrote: “Trying, but currently failing, to muster up a semblance of enthusiasm for this royal baby story before tomorrow's @GMB.

“Hopefully Meghan will announce her son is identifying as a gender-fluid vegan before we go on air.”

But his tweet was met with a barrage of criticism from those who lambasted his “pessimistic” response.

One wrote: “@GMB He shouldn't be on air tomorrow with views like this, please can we have a presenter who is prepared to rejoice with the nation.”

Congratulations: Piers Morgan eventually sent well wishes to the new parents (ITV)

Another tweeted: “Piers, it's a good news story for a change and Harry was so happy, like most new dads.”

“Piers it's Bank Holiday Monday for goodness sake have a day off lol... What's positive about today? Respect,” read somebody else’s comment.

Duke of Sussex 'absolutely thrilled' at birth of baby boy

But Morgan did celebrate the new arrival at the top of this morning’s show, explaining that his mum had asked him “not to knock” the Royal Baby as she encouraged him to “think about when his children were born”.

Although attempting to abide by his mum’s stern words, Morgan urged Prince Harry “not to wear a papoose” as he “finds them emasculating”.

He later conceded: “The arrival of a new baby is always a wonderful thing. Wish them all the very best.

“Meghan, Harry, little Piers…you have been told right? It’s like a final ‘sorry for ghosting you’ but it’s all been about this.”

Good Morning Britain is on ITV, weekdays at 6am
