Piers Morgan mocked Everton back in February as he backed them to face the drop with Arsenal winning the league - but the broadcaster was horribly wrong.
Morgan angrily reacted after the Toffees won their first game under Sean Dyche, producing a major upset to take three points off of Arsenal at Goodison Park. James Tarkowski headed home their winner on the hour mark to hand the north Londoners only their second defeat of the season.
At the time Arsenal were sat top with a healthy lead whilst, going into the contest, Everton were 19th with only goal difference keeping them off the bottom. Nevertheless they were able to make a mockery of the 35-point gulf between the two teams - which had Morgan fuming.
He tweeted: "Dismal Arsenal performance today - we've been bullied around by one of the worst teams in the Premier League. Inexplicable." Everton responded with a witty GIF before Morgan replied: "See how cocky you’re feeling when we win the League and you get relegated…"
Well, after the antics of the final day, it is the Talk TV presenter who now looks the silly one. Abdoulaye Doucouré scored Everton's winner as they beat Bournemouth on Merseyside to get the win they needed to preserve their top flight status for a 70th straight year.
Arsenal meanwhile beat Wolves, but it was just their third win in nine games as their collapse over the past seven weeks has seen them throw away the title with Manchester City swooping in to retain their crown. Mikel Arteta's side drew at Liverpool in early April and have struggled ever since.
They gave up the lead at West Ham the following week and then had to salvage a point against Southampton after being 3-1 down at the Emirates. City beat them well at the Etihad whilst Brighton and Nottingham Forest have also taken three points off of them - the defeat at the City Ground ending any slim chances they had of still chasing down City.
Morgan has been willing to admit, despite the optimism around the strides forward made by Arsenal, that his team simply couldn't convert the position they were in and has been in no mood to praise them for that.
He said on the final day: "Too late to turn on the flourish gas again. Yes, we’ve improved massively and for that, great credit to Arteta & the players. But I can’t pretend I’m not still absolutely gutted about how we choked the League, especially given City’s last 2 results. So disappointing."
