Piers Morgan hints at why Cristiano Ronaldo may want to join Chelsea amid Man Utd 'wage claim'

Arsenal fan and well known broadcast journalist Piers Morgan has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo may want to leave Man United for a club like Chelsea as the Red Devils lack the ambition 'required' to keep their talismanic figure happy.

Erik ten Hag's first summer transfer window is shaping up to be quite a dramatic one. Despite seeming highly likely to have all of Frenkie de Jong, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia at his disposal for 2022/23, the exit of Ronaldo would arguably overshadow any incoming business.

The 37-year-old certainly played a massive part in United achieving the Europa League position on the final day of last season despite West Ham's slip ups. His 18 goals in the Premier League coupled with the six he netted In the Champions League run meant that it was a total disaster for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick respectively.

But now with Europa League football on the horizon and the prospect of Ronaldo's 19-season association with Europe's top competition coming to an end, no wonder he is seeking an exit in his twilight years but would Chelsea be the right move?

Not according to a certain talkSPORT journalist. "I would think if Thomas Tuchel wanted Cristiano Ronaldo, he would ask his new owner of that basis," Simon Jordan said.

"If Todd Boehly is going back to Tuchel with the perception of having Ronaldo at Chelsea is a good thing for their team then I’m not sure what that says about his particular vantage point on how the football team should be run but there’s nothing wrong with a two-way transaction of looking at things, discussing them in the rounds of the manager.

"Do I think it’s a good signing for Chelsea? No, I don’t. I think Chelsea probably need something different. Do I think Ronaldo can play till he’s 40? Well, who knows, at what standard. Scoring 24 goals can tell you he can score goals but teams are changing how they play and they’re playing with far more energy, far more requirements. First of all, I don’t think it would happen, if it were an option, I don’t think Tuchel would want Ronaldo."

Despite Tuchel's full stance on this potential transfer not being fully known despite his admiration from afar for one of the greatest players of all time, when an opportunity like this comes up, some suggest you just cannot turn it down.

If Ronaldo had some of the chances Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku spurned last season, the Blues' would have certainly accumulated more points. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner's mentality is another trait Tuchel would appreciate. Something that Manchester United simply don't have according to Piers.

He tweeted his opinion on the situation: 'Cristiano Ronaldo wants out of United because they don’t share his ferocious ambition & will to win. Especially some of the cocky, lazy younger players whose egos, unlike his, are writing cheques their performances don’t cash. That’s the real story.'

Chelsea fan and a well-known name in the Cricket world Kevin Pietersen added more fuel to the fire with his cheeky reply: 'Which is why he’s coming to Chelsea and going to live in Sunningdale…'

Is it just ambition though as to why Ronaldo may consider a Premier League switch to a rival?

Well, as the Manchester Evening News has revealed, not qualifying for the tournament Real Madrid won last season has meant that both the player in question and David de Gea have had to take 25% pay cuts ahead of 2022/23. A move which has reportedly 'upset' the former Juventus man who as it stands, will only earn 360,000-a-week instead of the 500,000-a-week he had initially agreed upon when joining last summer.
