Piers Morgan criticises 'disrespectful' BBC World Cup decision as Gary Lineker praised for opener

Piers Morgan has slammed BBC for their coverage of the World Cup opener between Qatar and Ecuador after watchers were left confused by the opening ceremony.

Due to the Women's Super League clash between Chelsea and Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, spectators may have missed BTS' performance alongside Morgan Freeman with it being shown online and on the red button instead of easily accessible coverage.

This is a far cry from the attention that Andrea Bocelli got at Euro 2020 with his rendition of Nessun Dorma, though those that did watch were largely complimentary of the spectacle on show at the Al Bayt stadium.

Morgan, who has been the centre of attention this week after the release of his infamous interview with Cristiano Ronaldo, voiced his annoyance at the BBC though, tweeting: "Outrageously disrespectful to Qatar that the BBC didn’t broadcast the World Cup opening ceremony, and instead put out more virtue-signalling guff about how awful it is. If they’re that appalled, they should bring home their vast army of employees & spare us this absurd hypocrisy."

The BBC did put together a montage of the best bits from the opening ceremony but then proceeded to discuss the geopolitical conversations that have surrounded this year's World Cup, with Gary Lineker delivering a bombshell opening segment.

The former England striker said: "Ever since FIFA chose Qatar back in 2010, the smallest nation ever to host football's greatest competition has faced some big questions. From accusations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers that built the stadiums where many lost their lives, homosexuality is illegal here, women's rights and freedom of expression are in the spotlight.

"Also the decision six years ago to switch the World Cup from summer to winter, against that backdrop there's a tournament to be played. One that will be watched and enjoyed around the world. 'Stick to football' say FIFA, well, we will, for a couple of minutes at least."
