Piers Morgan calls on Oscars' $140k gift bags to be donated for Ukrainian aid funds

Piers Morgan has called for those attending the Oscars 2022 to donate their lavish goody bags to a good cause.

The former Good Morning Britain host, 56, has suggested that those on stage this evening raffle off their $140,000 gift bags to help refugees currently fleeing the crisis in Ukraine.

Piers took to Twitter hours before the awards kicked off on Sunday night to muse that rather than "virtuous tearful speeches", Hollywood A-listers should auction off their "revoltingly ostentatious" goody bags in order to help amid the humanitarian crisis.

Nominees and presenters at this year's annual award ceremony will be presented with some incredible freebies - including the controversial addition of a piece of Scottish land.

The plots, which cost £150 per 100sqft, also include permission to use the title “Laird” or “Lady of Glencoe ” and celebrities can visit whenever they choose.

Tweeting to his 7.9million followers, broadcaster Piers suggested: "Rather than make virtuous tearful speeches tonight about how much they care about Ukraine, it might be nice if all the Oscars presenters & nominees auction their revoltingly ostentatious $140,000 gift bags to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees."

Lord Sugar, who often enjoys online sparring-matches with his pal, quote-tweeted Piers' original tweet, sarcastically replying: "Surprised you are not at the Oscar ceremony, you being a mega celebrity."

Piers hit back with: "I’ve been in 8 movies (which is 8 more than you) that have cumulatively grossed over $2bn - so I’m too big for the Oscars."

Later on, the broadcaster revealed who he wants to see collected one of the coveted trophies at tonight's 94th Academy Awards.

Sharing a throwback snap of himself and Best Actor nominee Will Smith, Piers tweeted: "I really hope Will Smith wins his first Academy Award tonight because a) he’s a brilliant actor.

"b) he’s superb as Richard Williams in ‘King Richard’ and c) that would mean I’ve played the piano for an Oscar-winner."

Amy Schumer will be leading the presenting duties at tonight's ceremony, alongside icons Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall.

It is the first time in three years that the Oscars has a host.

Amy appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show to discuss providing entertainment for the night all while raising awareness on the important issues happening around the world.

“I think there is definitely pressure in one way to be like, ‘This is a vacation, let people forget we just want to have this night,’ but it is like well we have so many eyes and ears on this show,” she told the host.

"I think it’s a great opportunity to at least comment on a couple of things. I have some jokes that kind of highlight the sort of current condition. I mean, there are so many awful things happening that it seems hard to focus on which one."
