Piers Morgan calls Holly Willoughby a 'tough cookie' as he shares truth behind her 'butter-wouldn’t-melt grin'

Piers Morgan has weighed in on the current drama that ITV’s This Morning is embroiled in. Last weekend, Phillip Schofield announced that he’d be leaving the show with immediate effect.

In the weeks leading up to Phillip’s exit, it emerged that he was involved in a bitter feud with co-host Holly Willoughby - read about where everything went wrong here. While he has also publicly backed Phillip, Piers has now issued his support for Holly too - also citing the reason behind the presenter’s “butter-wouldn’t-melt grin”.

Writing in his The Sun column, Piers said: “Holly’s a friend of mine, but beneath the benign butter-wouldn’t-melt grin and touchy-feely motivational Instagram posts lurks a tough, ambitious, brand-protective cookie, which is one of the reasons why I like her.”

Speaking of Phillip, Piers added: “I like Phillip Schofield too, despite a 25-year rift between us that developed after I wrote an unofficial 1992 biography about him entitled ‘To Dream a Dream – the Phillip Schofield Story’ and which only ended when he took me out for a long, drunken, and very entertaining lunch.

There was clear tension between Phillip and Holly during their final shows together (ITV)

“I know a lot of people who loathe him for the way he’s treated them, including my good friends Amanda Holden and Eamonn Holmes.” Who would you like to see replace Phillip? Let us know in the comments.

Piers is no stranger to controversy, having sensationally quit Good Morning Britain in 2021. He currently hosts his own show on Talk TV, Piers Morgan Uncensored.

On Saturday, May 20, Phillip announced that he’d quit This Morning. He said in a statement: "I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

"Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

"So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month."

Holly, who is currently on a break from the show, said: "It’s been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour. The sofa won’t feel the same without him."

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
