Piers Morgan broke his tweeting spree on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's tell-all Netflix docuseries. The TalkTV star was, like many, ready to be tuned into the first three episodes of the show, entitled simply Harry & Meghan, when they dropped on the streaming service at 8am on Thursday (December 8).
It comes just over two years after it was revealed that Meghan and Harry would be making a number of films and series, including documentaries and children's shows as part of a global deal the couple signed with Netflix in the months after they announced they were stepping back as senior royals.
The first volume of the series, featuring three episodes, comes exactly three months after Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, died. The second three hour-long episodes, aka 'Volume 2', will be released in a week's time on Thursday, December 15.
In the opening scenes, Harry is shown at Heathrow airport in footage he filmed himself in March 2020 at the culmination of the Megxit crisis and as he prepared to leave the UK for the last time as a senior royal. As Harry speaks, images of the couple flash on screen, followed by newspaper headlines and broadcasters' audio from coverage about their decision to step back from royal life.
Meghan, meanwhile, is then seen separately as the first episode shifts to what appears to be phone footage, filmed vertically, showing Vancouver Island, Canada. The 41-year-old former actress appears with a towel wrapped around her hair, appearing to speak into her phone camera, saying: "H is in London and I'm here." She shakes her head and then says: "I don't even know where to begin."
The series began with a written statement on a black background saying it is a "first hand account of Harry & Meghan's story told with never before seen personal archive". It said all interviews were finished in August 2022 and "members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series."
Harry says: "We've just finished two weeks, our final push, our last stint of royal engagements. It's really hard to look back on it now and go, 'What on Earth happened?'" He adds: "This isn't just about our story. This has always been so much bigger than us. No one knows the full truth.
"We know the full truth. The institution knows the full truth. And the media know the full truth because they've been in on it. And I think anybody else in my situation would have done exactly the same thing." Meanwhile, Meghan is seen saying: "I just really want to get to the other side of all of this. There is a silent pause before she appears emotional and says: "I don't know what to say anymore."
The first three episodes see the couple tell the real story of how they first met in 2016 as they were asked about the 'rehearsed' announcement of their engagement in 2017. There is also many references to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, from the 38-year-old as he breaks his silence on her Panorama interview.
Viewers also got to see Harry and Meghan simply being parents to their children, first-born son Archie, now three, and later Lilibet, now one, who wasn't born when they began filming the docuseries.
Taking to Twitter after the first half of the series dropped on Netflix Piers, who has been heavily critical of the Dukes and Duchess and even stormed out of his role on Good Morning Britain during a debate on Meghan's claims in their explosive Oprah interview before leaving his role when he refused to apologise for his comments, has had his say.
He tweeted: "This is worse than Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Something I didn’t think was humanly possible. #HarryandMeghanonNetflix." He later said that it was "disgusting" how Meghan and Harry appeared to brand Britain 'a racist country'. But he then interrupted his Meghan and Harry tweetathon with some career news of his own.
"UPDATE: Highest @PiersUncensored ratings on @TalkTV last night for three months," he tweeted referring to his own show. "Smashed Sky News & GB News. Thanks for watching!" He then scathingly added: "Tune into tonight for a special edition on this grotesque #HarryandMeghanNetflix whine-a-thon."
