Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg addresses lack of game time at new-look Tottenham

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says he is in newfound territory at Tottenham.

The Danish international was a fixture in the Spurs first-team under all of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte but has fallen out of favour under Ange Postecoglou.

Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have occupied the two central midfield positions since the Australian took charge as Spurs impress in the opening stages of the season.

The return of Rodrigo Bentancur from a long-term injury will increase competition for places too, limiting Hojbjerg’s chances of first-team football further.

Fulham were interested in a move for the former Southampton midfielder during the summer transfer window but the 28-year-old snubbed the chance to move to Craven Cottage.

Still, with Bissouma suspended as Spurs prepare to travel to the west London side after the international break, there is an opportunity for Hojbjerg to stake his claim. The player insists he is prepared to push for his spot, even if it is not a position he’s been in at the club thus far.

“We are in a very good position in the league, even though it is only a short time into the season, and we are making really good progress,” he told Ekstra Bladet.

“So, it’s all about keeping up. I haven’t played as much as I’ve been used to, but it’s also something you take with you and have to accept it and learn from.”
