Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pictured in Barcelona as Arsenal edge closer to transfer announcement

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has arrived in Barcelona ahead of his loan move there from Arsenal.

The 32-year-old has not been involved in a match day squad for the Gunners since being stripped of the club captaincy last month amid repeated disciplinary breaches.

Mikel Arteta has made it clear that the Gabon international is no longer a part of his plans at the Emirates after failing to include him in the group that travelled to Dubai for a midseason warm weather training camp.

And now it seems as though Aubameyang is expected to seal a loan move to La Blaugrana before the January transfer window after being spotted at an airport in the Catalan capital.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker had attracted some interest from Saudi sides Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, who were reportedly willing to cover his salary in full.

But the player's preference was to stay in Europe and once the Saudi Arabian Professional League transfer deadline passed on Sunday it became clear that he would be on his way to the Nou Camp.

The move leaves Arsenal a little short up front, as they look to qualify for Champions League football for the first time in half a decade.

As things stand, with Flo Balogun having joined Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the season, the only orthodox number nines in the squad are Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah, while Gabriel Martinelli can play there if needs be.

Nketiah had been the subject of late interest from Newcastle, but it appears he will be staying until his contract expires in the summer at time of writing.

Nicolas Pepe has also played up front in his career and is now back with Arsenal's group in Dubai after exiting the African Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast. The 25-year-old has reportedly attracted some attention from clubs in Spain however.

Meanwhile the Gunners have tracked Real Sociedad's Alexander Isak all month, but with the player's release clause said to be valued at upwards of £70 million, that deal looks complicated this late in the window.

football.london also understands that a deal for Raul de Tomas of Espanyol will be very difficult with just hours remaining until the window closes.
