Pie and smash: Police hunt driver who repeatedly rammed car into pie shop in Dagenham

Police are trying to trace a motorist who repeatedly rammed his car into an east London pie and mash shop.

Horrified onlookers watched as the black Mercedes was caught on camera ploughing into the building New Year's Day.

Footage taken by passers-by showed the vehicle, with no number plate, being reversed into the front of Brook Pie & Mash in Dagenham. Its tyres can be heard screeching as green steel shutters are smashed open.

The shop - empty of both staff and passengers – was closed at the time.

A shocked onlooker can be heard asking, “Why?”. A woman says “Oh my God” upon seeing the ram raid on Dagenham Road.

The eatery, on the border between Essex and London, is in Dagenham's top five restaurants according to TripAdvisor.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Dagenham Road, Dagenham at 1.50pm on Monday, January 1 to reports of a car that had crashed into a shop.

“The driver had left the scene before officers arrived.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver.”

Brook Pie & Mash were contacted for comment.
