Pictures show moment cars were submerged by the rising tide on Weston beach

These picture capture the moment cars were submerged by the rising tide on the beach in Weston-super-Mare. They were taken by a local resident, who lives in an apartment overlooking the beach.

She said: "On Friday evening at about 8.30pm, about half an hour before high tide, we realised that there were several cars at risk of being caught in the waves. Some owners were able to wade in and rescue their cars, but some were unaware.

"Some good-spirited members of the public tried to push the red car. It was impossible. However, the beach warden drove by and realised the car needed pulling out of the sea.

"He tried for about 10 minutes but it was futile. He had to give up and the car stayed in the water. Meanwhile the black car was also being surrounded by the incoming tide."

The resident, who did not wish to be named, added that all of the cars had been parked beyond the warning signs on the beach and said that she didn't witness any of the recoveries, as they all happened after dark but confirmed that all cars were eventually pulled out of the water.

Photos from the scene show even more cars on the beach - some close to the water themselves - with the black and red cars clearly partly submerged in the water. A huge crowd of people can be seen watching, or trying to help others who attempted to rescue the vehicles from the rising tide.

According to the resident, the weekend's heatwave, along with the sunset and high tide, drew in the massive crowd of people which she believes is why some decided to park their cars beyond the warning signs. It's not the first time this summer vehicles have been left submerged in water, or stranded on beaches.

Some of the vehicles left in precarious situations have even cost tens, even hundreds of thousands of pounds, while recently a delivery vehicle couldn't complete its round after becoming stuck. Drivers have been left red-faced while local residents and recovery crews have had to spend time pulling them out of their predicament.
