Pictures show damage to lorry after ‘vehicle left carriageway’ on M62

Pictures show damage to a lorry after a ‘vehicle left the carriageway’ on the M62.

The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway at around 6.50am this morning (Tuesday), according to traffic alert service Inrix. Only one lane is currently running past the scene, from junction 18 for Simister Island to junction 19 for Heywood.

In a post shared by North West Motorway Police, pictures show the lorry with a smashed windscreen and heavily damaged bumper. In another image, the back of the HGV has slid off the carriageway and knocked down a barrier. Fortunately, the driver only suffered minor injuries.

The lorry has now been removed from the stretch, but the surrounding roads are still experiencing severe delays.

North West Motorway Police cops tweeted: “A couple of photographs of the RTC on the M62 J18 to Birch Services - this vehicle has now been pulled out of the field by the recovery agent, colleagues at @HighwaysNWEST are working hard to clear the scene, but we still have only lane 4 running passed the scene.”

In an update, GMP Traffic said: "Officers attended this morning, luckily minor injuries however an investigation is underway to understand why this happened."

MancTraffic said queues remain on the M66, with slow traffic in the Heywood area. This includes Pilsworth Road eastbound towards Moss Hall Road, and Hareshill Road eastbound from Heywood Distribution Park to Manchester Road.

In an update, Intrix added: “There are long delays, queueing traffic and three lanes closed due to emergency repairs on M62 Eastbound from J18 M66 J4 (Simister Island) to J19 A6046 Middleton Road (Heywood). Congestion to the M60 clockwise, back to J13 (Worsley). Travel time is around 45 minutes.”

“Cameras show lanes one, two and three (of four) are now closed to conduct repair works following an earlier accident where a lorry left the carriageway. The lorry has now been recovered but the three lanes are still closed.”
