Picks and predictions for the 2023 Golden Globes

The 80th Golden Globes are hitting the airwaves tonight as celebrities gather to honor some of the best television and movies from 2022. There was some incredible content this year, ranging from the immense blockbusters (Top Gun: Maverick) to the quirky, emotional comedies (Everything Everywhere All At Once) to heartwarming sitcoms (Abbott Elementary) to haunting dramas (Severance).

So to prepare for the festivities, I’m going to pick who I want to win a few of the major awards and who I think will win. If I haven’t seen any/many entries in a category, I’ll make an educated guess.

Watch along tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

Best Motion Picture - Drama

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)

ELVIS (Warner Bros)

THE FABELMANS (Universal Pictures)

TÁR (Focus Features)

TOP GUN: MAVERICK (Paramount Pictures)

Who I Want to Win: Top Gun: Maverick

Who I Think Will Win: The Fabelmans

No one loves Top Gun: Maverick more than I do, and there’s a chance that it actually wins best picture. It’s the most popular movie of the year, and it was an absolute blockbuster. Instead, I think Steven Spielberg’s latest will win over voters.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

CATE BLANCHETT   TÁR

OLIVIA COLMAN   EMPIRE OF LIGHT

VIOLA DAVIS   THE WOMAN KING

ANA DE ARMAS   BLONDE

MICHELLE WILLIAMS   THE FABELMANS

Who I Want to Win: Cate Blanchett

Who I Think Will Win: Cate Blanchett

I unabashedly love Cate Blanchett, and — although I haven’t seen it yet — I’ve heard incredible things about her performance in Tár. This is a loaded field, for sure.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

AUSTIN BUTLER   ELVIS

BRENDAN FRASER   THE WHALE

HUGH JACKMAN   THE SON

BILL NIGHY   LIVING

JEREMY POPE   THE INSPECTION

Who I Want to Win: Austin Butler

Who I Think Will Win: Austin Butler

The conversation around Baz Luhrmann’s film felt mostly to be about how great Austin Butler was as the titular icon. He even seemingly changed his voice.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

BABYLON (Paramount Pictures)

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (Searchlight Pictures)

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE (A24)

GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (Netflix)

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS (Neon)

Who I Want to Win: Everything Everywhere All At Once

Who I Think Will Win: Everything Everywhere All At Once

EEAAO is one of the best movies that came out in 2022, and I can’t remember anything like it. The Banshees of Inisherin has appeal and acclaim, so it could sneak in and snag the Globe.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

LESLEY MANVILLE   MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS

MARGOT ROBBIE   BABYLON

ANYA TAYLOR-JOY   THE MENU

EMMA THOMPSON   GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE

MICHELLE YEOH   EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

Who I Want to Win: Michelle Yeoh

Who I Think Will Win: Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh was absolutely flawless in her role in EEAAO. Just flawless.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

DIEGO CALVA    BABYLON

DANIEL CRAIG    GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY

ADAM DRIVER    WHITE NOISE

COLIN FARRELL    THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN

RALPH FIENNES    THE MENU

Who I Want to Win: Colin Farrell

Who I Think Will Win: Colin Farrell

I’ve only seen Glass Onion of these five, but I’ve heard amazing things about Colin Farrell in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Best Television Series - Drama

BETTER CALL SAUL   AMC+/AMC

THE CROWN   NETFLIX

HOUSE OF THE DRAGON   HBO MAX

OZARK   NETFLIX

SEVERANCE   APPLE TV+

Who I Want to Win: Severance

Who I Think Will Win: Severance

If you haven’t watched the creepy and hilarious Apple TV+ series yet, stop what you’re doing and get on it. It was a nearly perfect first season, and the cast of Adam Scott, Christopher Walken, Zach Cherry and more are just fantastic.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Drama

EMMA D’ARCY   HOUSE OF THE DRAGON

LAURA LINNEY   OZARK

IMELDA STAUNTON   THE CROWN

HILARY SWANK   ALASKA DAILY

ZENDAYA   EUPHORIA

Who I Want to Win: Zendaya

Who I Think Will Win: Zendaya

Zendaya has won two Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Rue, and it’s time she add a Golden Globe to the mantle. Her performance was gripping and raw and stunning all at the same time.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama

JEFF BRIDGES   THE OLD MAN

KEVIN COSTNER   YELLOWSTONE

DIEGO LUNA   ANDOR

BOB ODENKIRK   BETTER CALL SAUL

ADAM SCOTT   SEVERANCE

Who I Want to Win: Don’t make me pick.

Who I Think Will Win: Adam Scott

I love so many of these actors and their performances in these roles. I hope Odenkirk gets the elusive award, but Luna and Scott were so wonderful. Costner and Bridges also turned out excellent performances. What do we even do here?

Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY    ABC

THE BEAR    FX

HACKS    HBO MAX

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING    HULU

WEDNESDAY    NETFLIX

Who I Want to Win: Abbott Elementary

Who I Think Will Win: Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary has been the best new sitcom in ages. It is full of heart, it’s hilarious and it is the perfect show for 2022.

Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

BLACK BIRD   APPLE TV+

DAHMER – MONSTER: THE JEFFREY DAHMER STORY   NETFLIX

THE DROPOUT   HULU

PAM & TOMMY   HULU

THE WHITE LOTUS   HBO MAX

Who I Want to Win: Black Bird

Who I Think Will Win: White Lotus

Black Bird on Apple TV+ might be one of the most underrated series of the year. Taron Egerton is absolutely fantastic — he should win the best actor award — and it’s a gripping story. This category is hard to predict because I can see The Dropout or Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story easily winning this.
