Two-time world champion Tyler Wright has kicked off Finals Day at J-Bay in thrilling fashion, pulling off a last-gasp victory in the quarter-finals of the World Surf League event in South Africa.

Wright was in control of her final-eight showdown against Gabriela Bryan until the final minute threw up a topsy-turvy finish.

Bryan needed to score 5.34 on her final wave to overtake Wright's two-wave tally, and the Hawaiian notched 6.27 to take the lead.

With just 10 seconds remaining, Wright set off on a wave needing 5.27 to win.

She pulled off a series of strong manoeuvres to secure a score of 5.60, handing her the win 12.93 to 12.60.

Defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore will face Molly Picklum in an all-Australian quarter-final, while world No.1 Carissa Moore is up against Sarah Baum, and Caroline Marks takes on Lakey Peterson.

Gilmore is sixth in the world rankings, and a deep run in South Africa will boost her chances of snaring a spot in the end-of-season finals, in which the top five surfers will battle it out for the crown.

With just one more event remaining after South Africa, world No.2 Wright has already secured her spot in the top five.

On the men's side of the draw at J-Bay, Australians Ethan Ewing and Connor O'Leary will go head to head, with the winner to earn a semi-final berth.

West Australian Jack Robinson faces a tough task against world No.1 Filipe Toledo in the quarters.

Star Brazilian Gabriel Medina is up against Ian Gentil, while Japan's Kanoa Igaraashi takes on Yago Dora.
