Photos showing time The Queen was all smiles on trip to famous Irn-Bru factory

It was one of Her Majesty's final visits to the Glasgow area and a special moment for fans of Scotland's 'other' national drink.

On June 28, 2021, Queen Elizabeth II made her first official visit north of the border since the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, who had passed away two months earlier.

Accompanied by her grandson, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, the late monarch was given a tour of AG Barr's factory in Cumbernauld, where Irn-Bru is manufactured.

Positively beaming, with a smile that was as wide as the Clyde, The Queen, then aged 95, met employees and local school children, as she officially opened the famous plant's new processing facility. The royals were also told about the company's long history, which goes back to 1901.

Her Majesty was in Scotland that week as part of her traditional annual trip for Holyrood Week.

During the tour, the Duke of Cambridge was asked by commercial director Jonathan Kemp if he had been a fan of the popular fizzy drink while a student at the University of St Andrews. Prince William replied that he hadn't, but had later been turned on to Irn-Bru while serving with the armed forces.

Press cameras caught the moment Prince William raised a glass. "Delicious," said the Duke, as he took a sip.

Later, Prince William was presented with a small jar containing the clear essence of Irn-Bru - the top secret mixture key to the drink's unique taste.

Having taken a long sniff, the Duke said: "I'm trying to guess what's in it, but that's quite hard, isn't it?"

"I'd love to tell you," replied upstream manager Colin Reilly. "This is a closely guarded secret."
