Photos show wrecked graves in cemetery after Mini ploughs in to them

Photos show the extent of damage to loved ones' graves after a Mini ploughed into them.

Emergency services were called to Landican Cemetery, on Arrowe Park Road, Wirral shortly before 9pm on Thursday. When they arrived at the scene, a Mini Countryman was reportedly found flipped onto its roof.

Paramedics and fire crews managed to free the driver from the car as police cordoned off the cemetery. It is not clear if the female driver was injured in the crash.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that a 70-year-old woman was arrested over the crash. The pensioner, from Wirral, was arrested and taken into custody on suspicion of drink driving.

Today, photos taken with a drone show the extent of damage to the graves. It shows debris surrounding them and it appears a number of headstones have also been knocked down.

A Wirral Council spokesperson also said on Twitter today at 11.50am that Landican Cemetery remained closed to visitors. They said a number of headstones were damaged as a result of an "out of control vehicle".

The council said it was working to contact family members affected by the incident. The spokesperson said: "Landican Cemetery remains closed to visitors at this time as part of an ongoing police incident which saw a number of headstones damaged as a result of an out of control vehicle. We are working to contact family members affected."

The photos also show that officers remain at the scene today and a police van and car have blocked the entrance to the cemetery. In a statement on Thursday, a Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We have arrested a woman on suspicion of drink driving following a road traffic collision on Arrowe Park Road this evening (Thursday 14 April).

"At around 8.45pm we received a report that a that a white Mini Country Man drove into several grave stones at Landican Cemetery.. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended and safely removed the driver from the vehicle. A 70-year-old woman from Wirral was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

"She has been taken into custody for questioning."

Witness and forensic enquiries are ongoing at the scene and in the area. Anyone who has information is asked to contact Merseyside Police.
