Photos show abandoned Edinburgh hotel as it's demolished to make way for student flats

An abandoned Edinburgh hotel has been torn down to make way for new student flats.

Northfield House Hotel, on Lasswade Road has been in operation since 1870 but ceased trading years ago. Prior to the pandemic, it was viewed as a useful amenity for locals and tourists to the Gracemount area.

It was announced back in 2021 that the site was going to be used for student accommodation after the grand Victorian building lay empty frozen in time.

Although the plans were rejected earlier in the year, the historic hotel will be demolished and modern student accommodation will be in its place.

In 2021, we reported how the Liberton and District Community Council objected to the proposal and cited fears over the building not fitting in with the character of the area and also worry about the new transient student population contributing little to the local community.

Now two years after the plans were approved by the Scottish government, the hotel has been boarded up and the conservatory is starting to get pulled down.

Once the whole building is gone, a five-storey student accommodation building, with 99 rooms, including 90 studio apartments will be in its place.

The housing will be designed and managed by companies specialised in offering pre-furnished and decorated rooms, including kitchens, social areas and co-working spaces, as well as professional services, such as concierge, cleaning and welfare.
