Photo of Joe and Jill Biden with Jimmy Carter and his wife baffles social media

A picture of US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill towering over Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn has raised eyebrows on social media.

The odd-looking pictures captures the standing president, 78, and his wife Jill, 69, sitting beside the 39th US President and former First Lady during a trip to Georgia last week.

But the picture has gone viral after being shared on social media as the Carters appear tiny while sitting next to the Bidens - leading some to dub them "The Hobbit Carters".

The photo, which was shared by the Carters Centre on Twitter, shows Jill kneeling beside Jimmy, now 96, while her husband kneels next to Rosalynn, 93.

The four met up as the Bidens wanted to meet the oldest-living president in the history of the White House.

A Tweet user said he 'fixed it' by editing the picture so the Carters were the bigger ones (@DeonardoLeVinci/Twitter)

The Carter Foundation shared the picture saying: "We’re pleased to share this wonderful photo from the @POTUS and @FLOTUS visit to see the Carters in Plains, Ga.! Thank you President and Mrs. Biden!"

The weird proportions in the image are believed to have been caused by the photographer using a wide lens to fit them all in, but that in turn caused the Bidens to look disproportionately bigger than the Carters.

Perplexed Twitter users commented on the bizarre picture.

While one joked about Biden being a 'giant who will crush you'.

The Washington Post q uotes author Jonathan Alter said that at 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-10, the Carters “aren’t tiny people, but they are in the medium-to-smaller size among presidents and first ladies".

He then added that there is also the fact that "when you’re very old, you shrink".

Mr Biden said it was "great" to meet his predecessor as he told reporters: "He reminded me that I was the first person to endorse him outside of Georgia, Yahoo News reported.

"And we sat and talked about the old days."

Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States between 1977 to 1981.
