A photo of a weekly shop of budget products from Asda costing less than £30 is trending online. The picture shows a range of items from the supermarket's Smart Price and Farm Stores ranges that will set customers back £28.07.
It follows a publicity drive by food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe highlighting a lack of budget products available in supermarkets. Asda responded by expanding its Smart Price and Farm Stores products into all of its stores.
The Manchester Evening News reports that a picture of products laid out on a table in an Asda store, which was tweeted by a customer, has received more than 5,000 likes. The photo of the display from a store in Gloucester shows items ranging from tinned meats and veg to cooking sauces, cordials and cleaning products.
Asda has made a total of 200 budget products available in 581 stores. The retailer has also made all the products available to purchase online.
Tagging Jack's Twitter handle into his post, customer Gary Oakley tweeted: "Well done @BootstrapCook (Jack) - love to see this." Jack responded by saying she would go and stand in front of the display if the store wasn't so far away from where she lives.
While the picture generated much celebration online, some have been more critical. A number of Twitter users questioned the nutritional value of the products and queried what meals could be made from the items.
One commented: "A bowl of rice with strawberry jam on top. Yes it's a start but almost everything on that table is processed.
"Where is the fresh fruit and veg. That's far more important than cheap chocolate and jam."
The display, however, showcases just a small selection of what the full range has to offer. A 15 pack of eggs, for example, can be purchased for just £1.18 and an 825g block of mild white cheddar cheese is priced at £3.65.
