Phoebe Bridgers has shed light on her recent abortion experience in a new interview, in an effort to shed the stigma that is attached.

The US singer, 28, revealed earlier this year that she had an abortion last October while on tour, around the same time the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Bridgers wrote in a post on Instagram: “I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour.

“I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.”

The musician spoke in more detail about having the procedure as she appeared on the latest cover of Teen Vogue.

Bridgers said her abortion was “super safe” speaking to the publication, as she showed her support for those wanting the same procedure.

The hitmaker, who looked striking on the cover in dark lipstick and slicked back hair, told the publication: “I hate going to the doctor’s office, so doing that was anxiety-riddled. I also hate having people near any sensitive part of my body, so I was already nervous.

“[In the end, though,] it was just super nice.”

Bridgers added: “Don’t let anybody freak you out about an abortion. Because unless you’re doing it in an unsafe way, there are resources for you if you’re trying to get one — and you should f***ing have one, for whatever reason.

“It’s super safe. Shout-out to Planned Parenthood. I was very held during it.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bridgers discussed how the landscape of rock and alternative music is changing positively to a more diverse group of artists from LGBTQ+ and minority communities.

The Motion Sickness singer said: “It’s just sad that we’ve been forced to identify with white boys…. I think it shows you how desperate we’ve all been for any f***ing representation. I also think, at the heart of it, it’s just wanting to be understood.”

Bridgers also shared her views on cancel culture in regards to the well-publicised Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial, after which Heard was mocked and Depp praised.

Bridgers said: “I think that there’s been this falsehood — and I think queer people are included in this — of having to be the perfect victim, or the perfect survivor, or the perfect representation for your marginalized community.

“If Amber Heard exhibited any neurotic behaviour, it was held against her. Then Johnny Depp, out of his mouth, admitted some of the most violent, crazy shit in court and it’s somehow like, people aren’t surprised?

“That whole situation was so upsetting to me, that it was treated like a fandom war. Laughing at someone crying in court? It was disgusting.”
