Phillip Schofield steps down from This Morning as Covid misery continues

Phillip Schofield has revealed he's unable to return to host This Morning on Monday.

The star announced the news on Instagram as he shared a photograph of his latest positive lateral flow test.

"This really is the day that keeps on giving," he moaned as he apologised to Holly Willoughby and his This Morning team.

It came after Phil told his followers that his house had suffered water damage on Sunday morning.

The presenter said being off work had proved to be a 'small consolation' as he wouldn't have known about his leaking pipes if he'd been at the studio today getting ready for Dancing On Ice.

Phil pulled out of the skating show on Saturday after testing positive for Covid again.

Stephen Mulhern will be standing in for Phil as he reunites with his former Ministry of Mayhem co-star Holly Willoughby.

As the duo prepare for their first show together, disaster-struck Phil was stuck at home trying to stop his house from flooding.

He lamented to his social media followers: "Life is full of small consolations... if I hadn't tested positive and had gone to Dancing on Ice the house would be flooded!"

On Saturday, Phil told his followers he was so eager to be fit for Dancing On Ice on Sunday that he took a lateral flow test twice to make 'absolutely sure' he was positive.

Offering his replacement some words of advice, Phil told Celebrity Catchphrase star Stephen to have an 'amazing time.'

"It's SO much fun," Phil told his ITV buddy.

Breaking his silence on the announcement, Stephen said: "I’m very much looking forward to being back hosting alongside my good friend Holly this weekend.

"It’s big shoes to fill and I’m wishing Phillip a speedy recovery.

"I’m a big fan of Dancing on Ice and for one night only I’m thrilled to be rink side watching the action unfold. It’s going to be unbelievable!"

It's not yet known who will be replacing Phil on This Morning next week.

Over the last few days, the likes of Rochelle Humes, Vernon Kay, Josie Gibson and Alison Hammond volunteered their services to front the award-winning morning show.

On Tuesday, Phil phoned into the show from home and said he was doing 'mostly fine' as he sported an 'isolation nation' hoodie to poke fun at his plight.

The weekend previously Phil revealed that he'd headed to the theatre and out to a restaurant with estranged wife Stephanie Lowe and their daughters Molly and Ruby.

He also presented Dancing On Ice on Sunday night and This Morning on Monday.

His usual co-star Holly has been absent from This Morning for over a week as she films scenes for new TV show Superstar Survival with Lee Mack in Southern Europe.
